04- Career Goals

Short Term Goals (0-1 Year)

My immediate goal is to graduate and secure a UI/UX Designer role in Singapore, within a large tech or product-driven company such as MAANG, Grab, Shopee, or similar organisations. I aim to start in a larger company environment as it provides structured workflows, mentorship, exposure to scalable systems, and greater network opportunities, allowing me to build a strong foundation early in my career.

Before graduating in December, I will focus on strengthening my portfolio and online presence. This includes:
-Building and launching my portfolio website
-Refining 2 existing projects and creating 2 new case studies
-Publishing my work on Behance and a design Instagram account
-Documenting my design journey to build an online presence

After completing my Major Project in October, I will begin actively applying for jobs, targeting at least 2 applications per day to maximise my chances of securing a role.

Once employed, I aim to:
-Build my professional network within the tech industry, reaching at least 100 LinkedIn connections
-Continue refining my portfolio and develop 2 additional case studies
-Fully commit to my role and gain practical experience in real-world product development

This stage is focused on becoming industry-ready and establishing myself as a capable junior designer. At the same time building my audience online through Behance, LinkedIn and Instagram.

Medium Term Goals (1-3 Years)

In the medium term, my goal is to grow beyond execution and move towards product strategy, decision-making, and more research-driven UX roles. I aim to become a designer who contributes not only visually, but also strategically within product teams.

Alongside my full-time role, I will:
-Expand my skillset into web design, branding, motion/video, and 3D, creating 4 projects across these areas
-Build a consistent online presence, posting weekly on LinkedIn and sharing work on Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit.
-Grow my audience to at least 1,000 followers on Instagram, positioning myself as a visible and credible designer

During this period, I will also begin taking on freelance work. My goal is to be approached by at least 3 clients per year within this timeframe, allowing me to gain experience working with different industries while still employed.

This phase focuses on transitioning into a more strategic designer while laying the foundation for freelance opportunities.

Long Term Goals (3-5+ Years)

My long-term goal is to transition into a full-time freelance designer, working independently with clients across different industries and regions.

By this stage, I aim to:
-Build a strong personal brand where clients approach me directly for work
-Generate a stable income through freelance projects, allowing me to leave full-time employment
-Relocate my base to Malaysia (KL and JB) for a lower cost of living, while maintaining connections and networks I have established in Singapore
-Work as a digital nomad, taking on international clients while traveling

As a freelancer, my core focus will remain in UI/UX and digital design, supported by my broader skills in branding, motion, and digital media.

In terms of personal brand, I aim to:
-Grow to 10,000+ followers on Instagram
-Reach 100,000+ followers on TikTok-Have a face online as a traveling designer, showing my journey
-Position myself as a designer whose work is influenced by different cultures, environments, and experiences

This direction reflects my goal of achieving a balance between creative freedom, financial stability, and flexibility, while building a unique identity as a designer.

Conclusion

Overall, my career plan follows a clear progression: starting in a structured tech environment to build strong foundations and networks, developing into a more strategic designer, and eventually transitioning into independent freelance work with a strong online presence. This approach allows me to align with industry expectations while also working towards a more flexible, self-directed creative career.

05- Skills Reflection

At my current stage, my skillset is best defined by concept-driven and systems thinking, rather than purely visual execution. I approach design by focusing on structure, intent, and how experiences function within a larger product or system. This was reinforced through my internship, where working on a Design Language System shifted my perspective from designing individual screens to building scalable and consistent solutions.

Technically, I am confident in tools such as Figma and Adobe software, with experience in UI design and maintaining design systems. However, I recognise that to align with industry expectations, I need to further develop my capabilities in UX research, interaction design, and strategic decision-making. This includes practising user flows, and documenting design rationale more clearly within my case studies.

Professionally, I am actively improving my communication and confidence in presenting ideas, as well as my ability to collaborate effectively within teams. I aim to do this by sharing my work regularly on LinkedIn and seeking feedback, as well as articulating my decisions more clearly during critiques and presentations. Moving forward, I aim to continuously adapt by learning new tools, exploring emerging trends, and building projects that strengthen both my strategic thinking and multidisciplinary skillset.

06- Self Promotion

To position myself effectively, I will use my portfolio website as the central hub, showcasing 4–6 strong case studies with clear documentation of process, problem-solving, and outcomes. This will be the main asset used for job applications in Singapore.

Alongside this, I will build a consistent content base across platforms:

-LinkedIn (weekly): insights, reflections, and lessons from projects and industry trends to grow my professional network
-Instagram (2–3x/week): visual posts of projects, snippets of UI work, and design breakdowns to build a recognisable style
-TikTok (1x/week): short-form content on process, ideas, and my journey as a designer
-Behance (per project): polished case studies to increase discoverability and strengthen credibility within the design community

Rather than only posting outcomes, I will focus on process, thinking, and personality. I will also ensure all platforms are interconnected, directing traffic back to my portfolio and optimising my profile for visibility through keywords, clear positioning, and consistent messaging. This approach supports both employability and my long-term goal of attracting freelance clients through a visible and credible personal brand.
